The four main things you need to know to manage whitetails is AGE,NUTRITION,BUCK/DOE RATIO ,and GENETICS.
By passing up a fork will you bag the biggest buck of your life?
If you set a few guidelines you can have the best spot in the county.Researchers at Mississippi State found out that only 1.6% of the 1 1/2 year-old bucks and 4.4% of 2 1/2 year-old in Mississippi die of natural causes.Meaning if you don't kill that small 6 point the first year it'll probaly live next year bigger (and yes smarter) but that is the price to pay for a real trophy.
If you set some guidelines here is a few.
six point or better
16 in. spread or better
2 1/2 or older
mature deer either sex
I advise this for everyone
kill 2 does for every buck
If you have 1 to5 b/d ratio you may take that up to three does . The ideal ratio is1 to 2, you do the math.If you have that 1 to 2 ratio. Kill the same amount of bucks & does. Until it gets out of control(it should'nt).
Killing Does
You should always kill does take advantage of the doe days and go out there and kill some does.If you don't kill does they'll over populate your lease or hunting spot.That means they will eat every shurb down to the root.Cause their is so many deer there isn't enough food.
QDM
Let's consider 1,000 acre farm with enough quality habitat to support about 50 healthy deer.Let's assume that the sex ratio is 1 buck to every 6 does(which isn't unreasonable).This means the farm has 7 bucks for every 43 does.If we increase the doe harvest, so the sex ratio is 1:1,we have 25 bucks to 25 does on the same range, which is 18 more bucks than when we started QDM.If we further the limit the harvest of smaller bucks, then we will have many more large,mature bucks living on the farm as well.
Feeding Programs
A great way to give nutrition to deer is with supplemental feeding.The best stuff to feed to deer is soy beans it is extremely high in protein.Let's say,at it's best, corn is 8% protein, but soy beans (the feed kind not the kind you plant) at it's lowest is 35% thats is extremely high.Soy beans are like steriods for deer. They eat it and get bigger and bigger.
The best way to make a white tail go nocturnal is to feed it where it come and go like a cattle trough. The best way to feed them is to feed in a feeder that goes off 30 min. before sunrise and 1 hour before sunset.Theis way the deer are on a schedule
